英文,是台灣高中生的致命傷

龍樹菩薩在大智度論裡面說過一段話:『良藥,雖能治癒疾苦,但倘若不能保持順序,因此失去藥效,那病也治不好。』台灣教育部規定:國中畢業生,約需懂800-1200個單字;高中畢業生,約需懂8000-12000個單字。以這樣的能量,要去澳洲讀中學或高中,似乎非常薄弱。

即使真要去讀語文中心、把英文『紮實的打好底子』一樣,學習也是有次序:一定是GE基礎英文的文法、聽跟說的技巧『打地基』;地基挖的夠深、連續壁打的夠穩密,然後才開始架鋼骨:FCE 劍橋初級英文- EB商用英文- CAE 劍橋高級級英文。AE 1-2-3 升學英文,頂多算是灌漿!並不是讀個20週、30週的英文,就可以順利的讀畢業的!

所以,請您再深思一下:只擁有800個字的國三生,或是8000個字的高三生,要如何去和『母語是英文』的澳洲學生競爭呢?

A Bill

To have at least 2 advisory periods per month changed into study hall. Students will use the advisory time as study hall, but they willl still be in their advisory group. Many students wanted time to work, but they can’t get into the e-course. Having an entire period for students to work on homework is useful for both teachers and students.

Students can ask the teachers to aid them with their work immediately without wasting time, and it would be more effective. Teachers can also use that time to do their work, such as preparing for class and talk to students at the same time. Other than that, if students finish their work during school, they can have more time doing other things, such as sports activities or extra classes.

Section 1: We should change the time that we use for advisory on Wednesday afternoons to study hall. Many students wish to join the e-course and work on their homework so they wouldn’t have to spend a long time on it at home. If students have to spend all their time at home doing homework, they wouldn’t have time to interact with their families and friends. Although grades in middle school wouldn’t affect students’ college applications, many students take their grades very seriously. So, many students would stay up late finishing their work, to make sure that the assignment won’t be late. However, studies show that not getting enough sleep weakens your immune system. But, most students couldn’t get in the e-course since this is a small e-course that only allows up to 10-12 students.

Section 2 : Having a mandatory study hall won’t affect our class schedules. Since there is already a time set aside from regular subjects, the rules will just be like the ones in home room. Being split into groups is already a good start since there will be fewer distractions. Since there are five people in each group, it is quieter than being in a room with 25+ students. If students don’t have any assignments to finish/wastes time it will be just like classroom rules: if they aren’t on track, they get a warning, change of seats, then principal office. Since House groups are sometimes during advisory period, we can have one day set aside to it, just like we do now.

Section 3 :  Having a period that gives students a time to do their work is highly beneficial to both teachers and students, and freeing up some of their time after school. Students can get help on assignments given by that teacher and won’t have to struggle to find the answer. It’s beneficial to teachers since students will then be monitored by them so late/missing assignments will decrease. Teachers can also have time to do their work, like grading other class projects/assignments, while also ready to answer questions being asked. Having a mandatory study hall will also put less stress on students after school since many of them have other things, like after school classes or sports. For example, our school is very passionate about sports, but sports usually go until five in the afternoon, and completing homework can go late into the night. If we have a time dedicated to concentrating on school tasks, students will become productive and prevent them from procrastinating.

Hide and Seek : Featuring Dyes and Additives

Technology plays a key part in the world of food, having both a positive and negative impact. Because of technology, ingredients such as cocoa powder can be replicated in labs and are not required to be harvested from real cocoa plants. The most used dye, Red 40, is used mostly to give color to candies and drinks, such as Nesquik’s strawberry milk (Bonar). Some red dyes include cochineal, which are bugs that have been dried and grounded into powder but are odorless (The Real Truth). The reason dyes are implemented into foods is because it helps add color to foods, makes colors more vibrant, ensures the color stays for long periods of time, and to provide consistency (Food Dye and ADHD). How can we tell what is real and what is fake anymore? The government should enforce artificial dyes and ingredients to be labeled next to the additive name. This is because these ingredients can cause consumers to have behavior issues, additives could create physical health problems, and people have the right to know what they are purchasing.

Notably, additives have been proven to play a key role to cause children’s activity levels to peak higher. The new energy is caused by common additives such as artificial food dyes, or AFC (Bonar). Not only do dyes cause hyperactivity, but it can also include “inattention, sleep problems, and irritability” (Stevens 23). This can cause children to concentrate poorly in school and at home. In 2000, researchers found out that dyes do indeed, worsen children’s behaviors. Since there wasn’t sufficient research, the FDA, or the Food and Drug Administration, decided to look deeper into this issue. If a child takes more than 50 mg of food dye, it could cause them to have a negative reaction to the dyes, especially children with ADHD (Stevens 23). Cereals such as Cap'n Crunch's Oops All Berries contains “41 mg of AFCs and 15 g of sugar per serving” (Bonar). In just one meal, 41 mg of dye is already consumed, and so it’s not difficult to reach 50 mg very quickly. Some people believe that it’s the sugar that causes children to become more hyper. However, that is false; since sugar enters the bloodstream so fast, it could cause a sudden adrenaline spike, and the decrease of activity is due to the adrenaline wearing off (Food Dye and ADHD). The dyes and additives are the ones to blame since they play a significant part in behavioral issues.

Following behavioral issues, harmful additives and ingredients can cause severe health issues to consumers. An example is artificial trans-fatty acid, or TFA. They are made to increase the product’s shelf life, and to make baked goods tastier and have a better texture, but it can still lead to concerning health problems. On the back of boxes and packagings, “a product containing less than 0.5 grams of TFAs per serving could be labeled as ‘0g trans fat,’” (Hendry e39). It is impossible to tell the difference, so most customers think that it’s TFA-free, yet the more they consume, the higher the chance of them developing cardiovascular diseases. Over-consumption of trans-fats can also lead to high cholesterol levels, which then eventually turns into atherosclerosis (What is Atherosclerosis). Atherosclerosis is the “hardening and narrowing of the arteries -- silently and slowly blocks arteries, putting blood flow at risk” (What is Atherosclerosis). Another example of a dangerous additive is benzoic acid. It’s used as a food preservative in jams, jelly, beer, etc. to prevent mold and bacteria. Some side effects include asthma attacks, rashes, neurological disorders, and much more (“Dangerous Food Additives). Many people believe without these additives, our foods would spoil faster which means throwing it out and wasting money on fresher produces. The cost of being hospitalized, because of health concerns are greater than buying foods that are fresh.

Finally, foods are being labeled under other names. Food companies are using words such as ‘improved’ and ‘enriched’ on boxes, but that doesn’t mean the product is healthier. During the first process, the nutrients are being stripped off of the original product. Manufacturers then “add a few synthetic vitamins and minerals to artificially give it some nutritional value” (“Dangerous Food Additives”). In the end, the food product ends up with less nutrition than it first started with and our body cannot receive the proper minerals. Often times, when words such as ‘natural flavors’ or ‘artificial flavors’ are labeled on a package, shoppers tend to walk away from artificial and turn towards natural. However, the two flavorings are very similar. “The main difference between a natural and artificial flavor is the origin of the flavor chemicals” (Andrews). Natural flavors come from plants or animals, while artificial flavors are made in a lab. An example could be the blueberries in a granola bar. Yes, it might have the same taste as real blueberries, but the flavor is extracted from a plant, goes through a series of being drowned by chemicals, and then placed into plain granola bars (Woerner). Labellings flavors that weren’t part of the original product under artificial clearly would be beneficial to everyone who’s purchasing foods.

The government should state that all food manufacturing companies be required to label and remove the harmful ingredients to ensure no bad chemicals are injected into people’s bloodstreams. Food additives are causing children to have behavior issues, causing health problems to everyone, and purchasers cannot tell what they’re buying since the labels are falsely written. Foods are being bombarded with these synthetic materials yet stores are still letting them be sold. Because of all this, the government should require manufacturers to label all artificial additives.

Hello, everyone. I would first like to thank the parents for attending and making this event happen, teachers for putting up with our shenanigans for the past three years, and classmates who make life at Morrison enjoyable.

These past four years have really stood out to me and will really become a memory that’ll stick with me for the rest of my life. Sure, we might have some ups and downs, but that’s completely normal. On the first day of 5th grade, I didn’t really know what was going to be ahead of my life. I didn’t know who I was going to be friends with, how long I would be staying, or even where I was going to sit in the cafeteria that day. I was just the new, shy kid from a public school. After a blur of what seemed like ten seconds, fifth grade was already over, and it was time to say goodbye to my first Morrison teacher, Mrs. Lima, and move on to Middle School.

As 6th grade rolled around, it was an exciting new experience for all of us. Lockers, classes where we could actually change classrooms, and most importantly, a new homeroom teacher that no one else had before. As we found out recently, she thought we were immature little children for the first half of sixth. As the year went on, she grew accustomed to our jokes and sometimes even joined in. She tells us lots of little stories about her life and is just a really chill person to talk to. I’m glad that we got the chance to have her both in sixth and eighth grade.

Speaking of eighth grade, it was the year everyone was waiting for because we had leadership camp. Over the course of the years, my friend group changed quite often. I didn’t really feel like I fit in with anyone until leadership camp. Who knew a retreat with my class could be so life changing? I finally found the people that actually cared and loved me for who I am, and I felt like I can be myself around them.

It’s a shame that I have to leave this fantastic class. You guys were like a genuine family and you all cared for one another whenever a problem arises. Being in a private school is a really good experience that I am glad I could try out since everyone knew each other every year. A public school, on the other hand, was a big mess since there was often four or five classes per grade. Sometimes it may seem like we all hate each other, but that’s not true. It’s called friendly banter. In some sense. Sometimes it can result in crying, but most of the time, it results in a closer relationship bond.

Now it seems to be a repeat of fifth grade, everything happened too fast. I now need to say goodbye to all of the fantastic teachers I had and move on to the next chapter of my life in a different country.

As we head into high school, we need to start going our separate ways, it’s an inevitable part of life. As people leave, more people will join and it’ll create new relationships and influences. While we enjoy this night and slowly savor it, I hope that you’ll all remember that you’re in this together. No one is left behind, for we are all family, no matter where we are in the world. Thank you for listening.
